Abstract: A biologically motivated computing model, called as P system was proposed by Paun around the year 2000 in the area of membrane computing, inspired from the structure and functioning of living cells. The basic model of a P system has a membrane structure with a hierarchical arrangement of membranes, with multisets of objects placed inside the regions of the membranes, evolution rules governing the processing of these objects, and transfer of objects from one membrane to another membrane taking place by certain commands. Theoretical and foundational development in this topic has been very significant and successful but practical development is still in its infancy although it looks promising. The basic intention of this talk is to discuss one of the variants of P system, known as Rewriting P system bringing out both theoretical developments and possible applications related to this kind of P system, besides a brief overview of the concepts and other related ideas in membrane computing.
