Abstract: Aiming to abstract computing ideas and models from the structure and the functioning of living cells, a computing model with the generic name of P system was proposed in the field of membrane computing. String Rewriting P system is one among several variants of P systems, introduced with a view to represent information in symbolic computations based on structured strings of symbols and string rewriting rules. This model was extended subsequently to handle picture objects in digitized form using array-rewriting rules, in particular contextual kind of rules. This talk is intended to provide an overview of the model. Known as contextual array-rewriting P system, highlighting the working of this system and also pointing out the problems that remain to be investigated. Possible areas of application of array-rewriting P systems will also be indicated.
